RPST Team Mission

Our mission is to increase the level sailors in the BC lower mainland region. Team members have an opportunity for a great experience that will broaden their horizons both within and outside sailing. The plan is to develop a strong team of youth sailors who have demonstrated an interest and ability to reach a higher level of sailing skills and competitive accomplishment mostly in Optimist and Laser Radial classes. This team will appeal to those athletes who have targeted to reach the BC provincial Team and want to maximize the outcome of this amazing opportunity. The rationale for the team is based on the recognition that the Rocky Point sailing association is an active club in the development of high performance athletes. The long term goal of this race team is to provide a solid base of talent in the BC region. In order to achieve these goals the team concept is being organized around 3 key initiatives. The first is to ensure that the coaching is of the highest caliber possible. The second initiative is to have sailors participate, on a regular basis, in training sessions held at the club during the week and on the weekends. The third recognizes that to gain the right level of competitive exposure it will be necessary to compete on the BC circuit.

The BC Circuit consists of up to 10 regatta's a year, held by Yacht Clubs in BC

Applicants need to be proficient sailors that can skipper a dinghy without assistance on all points of sail in most conditions, but more importantly, applicants must have a passion for sailing. The RPSA Race Team is for those who want to learn and race hard all summer. Many hours of on water and dry land training are expected. Each athlete on the team will have to set goals and should take the necessary dispositions to move towards them during the summer. The coach will determine if the candidates are at the right sailing level to make the team. If the sailing level is insufficient, they will be encouraged to follow one of our summer learn to race programs and re-apply for the team the following year.
